Ras Al Khaimah’s green milestones and sustainable living

Ras Al Khaimah is taking exciting steps to enhance sustainability and improve everyday life for its communities. From energy-efficient buildings to conservation efforts, the Emirate is working towards creating a greener, more livable environment for everyone.

Efficient Water Management

Access to water is key to a comfortable lifestyle, and Ras Al Khaimah is making sure that everyone has reliable access. Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) has invested AED 465 million in rehabilitating the water network across the Northern Emirates, with AED 214 million dedicated to Ras Al Khaimah alone. This project will ensure more efficient water distribution and support sustainability for years to come. Plus, smart water meters are now installed, giving residents the ability to track and manage their water usage more easily.

Energy-Efficient Buildings and Homes

Reducing energy consumption not only lowers utility bills but also helps build a more sustainable city. In 2019, Ras Al Khaimah took a big step forward by completing retrofit works on four municipal buildings, making them more energy-efficient. The goal is to expand this initiative to both residential and commercial buildings, improving comfort and reducing environmental impact across the board.

Building a Sustainable Future

Ras Al Khaimah is committed to sustainability with long-term initiatives focused on energy efficiency and resource management. The Ras Al Khaimah Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Strategy 2040 (EE&R Strategy) aims to reduce energy and water costs, while supporting green development. Led by Ras Al Khaimah Municipality’s Reem Office, the strategy includes programs on everything from green building regulations and energy-efficient appliances to solar energy and water reuse.

All of these efforts are in line with national and global sustainability goals, helping create a cleaner, more efficient future for everyone in the Emirate.

Tourism is also part of the sustainability journey. The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) has launched initiatives that promote responsible travel. One of the most notable efforts is their Most Relaxed Cat in the World” campaign, which highlights the Emirate’s peaceful atmosphere and commitment to sustainable growth.

This initiative has helped Ras Al Khaimah achieve record-breaking tourism performance in 2024, with 1.28 million overnight visitors, a 12% increase in tourism revenue, and a 15% rise in MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) visitors.

Clean and Sustainable Public Spaces

Green spaces and clean public areas play a vital role in improving quality of life. To support this, Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ) organizes annual beach clean-ups at Al Hulaila, where volunteers work together to keep the coastal areas clean. These efforts not only help protect marine life but also ensure that residents and visitors can enjoy beautiful beaches for relaxation and recreation.

Biodiversity and Nature Conservation

Access to nature is crucial for a balanced lifestyle. The Environmental Protection and Development Authority (EPDA has designated protected areas, such as the Khor Al-Muzahimi Reserve, to safeguard local wildlife and preserve Ras Al Khaimah’s natural beauty. These conservation efforts protect biodiversity while offering more opportunities for both residents and visitors to connect with nature.

Sustainable Growth for a Better Future

By investing in sustainability, Ras Al Khaimah is shaping a future where growth and quality of life go hand in hand. With smart resource management, green infrastructure, and conservation efforts, the Emirate is creating a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone to enjoy.
