Markets & Souks

Souks are traditional markets that offer an authentic shopping experience and a glimpse into local culture. If you’re looking for specific items – like unique spices or pure fragrance oils, a trip to the local souk might be exactly what you need. Luckily, there are some excellent souks in RAK, with many maintaining their status for decades as local community hubs. So, here’s what you need to know:

Souk Al Mairid

Located near the waterfront, this is one of the largest souks in RAK. Technically, there are two Souk Al Mairids, one that mainly sells fish, vegetables, and fruit, and the other selling a mix of traditional and modern shops selling clothing, accessories, and electronics. You can also find traditional Emirati pottery and handicrafts, abayas and traditional clothing, and beautiful gold jewelry.

Old Souk

Souk Al Nakheel

Located in the Al Nakheel area near Manar Mall, this souk is a must-visit for foodies and those looking for a trip down memory lane. Souk Al Nakheel is filled with small stalls that sell traditional Emirati dishes like machboos, thareed, and harees. You can also find fresh produce, herbs, spices, and reasonably priced textiles. An integral cog in the Emirate’s history, it continues to be a bustling hive of activity today.

Shopping in Souks

The Kuwaiti Souk

Founded last century, this is one of the oldest souks in the UAE, and you’ll find it in the heart of the old city. The souk has a maze of narrow streets lined with shops selling everything from spices and textiles to jewelry and handicrafts. This is an excellent place to seek out traditional Emirati clothing and footwear, and it’s also perfect for souvenirs or gifts for friends and family back home. It got its name from the Kuwaiti hospital in the center of the souk that still exists now and is favored by both locals and tourists alike.

For a true taste of local culture, you must visit these local souks at least once.
