Junior Reporter Program gives AURAK students a front-row seat to real-world media experience in Ras Al Khaimah

When passionate storytellers come together, opportunities are born. That’s exactly what happened when the Ras Al Khaimah Government Media Office (RAKGMO) and the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) joined forces to launch the Junior Reporter Program, a hands-on initiative giving media students a taste of real-world journalism right here in the Emirate.

For many media and communications students, classroom learning ends before the real story begins, but through the Junior Reporter Program, they now get to live it, joining the Heart of RAK team to uncover local stories, cover events, and bring Ras Al Khaimah’s spirit to life.

Turning classrooms into a newsroom

Instead of just learning theory, students will get to work directly with the Heart of RAK team, the Emirate’s official storytelling platform, to write, film, and produce content that showcases the community through young voices. From local events and hidden gems to inspiring people and cultural stories, students will capture the essence of everyday life in Ras Al Khaimah.

Learn, create, and get published

Approved stories won’t just sit in lectures. They’ll be published on Heart of RAK, credited to the students, and shared across its channels. It’s a huge opportunity to build a real portfolio before even graduating, plus, their work could reach thousands of readers across the UAE.

Students accepted into the program will be mentored by both AURAK professors and media professionals from RAKGMO. They will go through the full editorial process, from pitching ideas and getting feedback to seeing their story go live. Think of it like a “teaching newsroom,” where students learn by actually doing.

Merit-based selection

Students are chosen each year through AURAK’s merit-based process, which considers academic performance and potential for storytelling excellence. This ensures the program nurtures the most dedicated and capable young journalists.

Beyond individual experience, the program encourages cross-pollination of learning, with Junior Reporters sharing their fieldwork, story drafts, and insights back in the classroom. This peer exchange allows the entire cohort to benefit from real-world exposure, transforming the classroom into a collaborative newsroom where theory meets practice.

Why it matters for Ras Al Khaimah

It’s all about the community. By empowering youth to tell authentic stories, Heart of RAK is giving residents and visitors a fresh, local perspective. It’s a step toward building a stronger connection between the next generation and the place they call home.

The Junior Reporter Program runs on a yearly cycle, with new students joining each academic year. Every story will carry the “Junior Reporter” tag on Heart of RAK, so when you see it, you’ll know it’s written by one of Ras Al Khaimah’s future media voices.

For AURAK students, this program is a unique opportunity to turn passion into practice, develop real-world skills, and see their work published, all while telling the stories of the community you live in.
