Explore nature at Wadi Shawka
This natural reserve is home to several hiking and biking trails, as well as a beautiful waterfall. So, if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, this is the perfect place to retreat. Keep an eye out for local wildlife on the trails, like the Arabian oryx, the mountain gazelle, and the Arabian leopard.
Several campsites dot the valley, too, inviting adventurers to extend their stay for a weekend getaway. Don’t miss the chance to unwind at the Wadi Shawka Dam, where you can enjoy the views and perhaps catch some fish.
TIP: Bring plenty of water and check the weather forecast for rain or high temperatures!
Enjoy a desert safari
A popular activity for tourists and residents, Desert safaris are a great way to explore the famous terracotta deserts of the Emirate and experience the traditional Bedouin lifestyle. Take part in customary Arabic activities from henna painting to date tasting, and dine under the stars while you watch belly dancing and Tanura shows. Most desert tour packages also include dune bashing, camel riding, sandboarding, and quad-biking options.
There are plenty of tour options to choose from, so be sure to book with a reputable operator and check if they follow the safety guidelines.
Visit Al Sawan Camel Racing Club
Head down to the Al Sawan Camel track to witness the time-honored tradition of the colorfully clad camel races. A long-standing custom rooted in Bedouin and Emirati tradition, camel racing has become a favorite pastime for locals and visitors alike. At Al Sawan Camel track, the arena is split into 3 tracks; the camels run on the main track’s soft terracotta sands while the spectators cheer from the inner and outer tracks. Typically a winter activity, races are between 6.30 am and 9.30 am, so be prepared to get up early – it’ll be worth it.
Take a boat tour
Ras Al Khaimah offers stunning waterways, mangroves, and the crystal clear seas of the Arabian Gulf. One such way to discover the natural beauty of the Emirate is by water. Several boat operators offer a variety of options to suit your preferences, from speedboats to traditional dhow and luxury yacht tours.
Experience the charm of traditional dhow boat tours as you embark on a leisurely coastal cruise. Some operators even offer fishing trips, where visitors can catch and grill their catch for dinner. For thrillseekers, speedboat tours promise an exhilarating high-speed journey. As you cruise through the sparkling waters, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and other marine life, making your tour an unforgettable wildlife encounter. For a touch of luxury, opt for a yacht tour that allows visitors to unwind while being served food and drink.
It’s recommended to book with a reputable tour operator and check weather conditions before taking the tour, such as The Yellow Boats or Royal Yacht Club of Ras Al Khaimah
Go on a birdwatching tour
With its expanse of wetlands, lush mangroves, and diverse natural habitats, the Emirate is a haven for numerous bird species. For avid bird enthusiasts, a bird-watching tour is an excellent choice. During these birdwatching outings, visitors are treated to sightings of some of the most commonly seen bird species, such as the flamingo, the white-cheeked tern, and the white-tailed plover.
Expert tour operators curate the best birdwatching spots while providing transportation, binoculars, and knowledgeable guides well-versed in the behavior and habitats of the birds. To make the most of this experience, the best time to go birdwatching is in winter when migratory birds have returned to the region.
